I grew up on golf courses. Almost all of my baby pictures are on Spring Hills GC. Mine was the first name ever on their member's board, when I was 6 months old. I love golf, but I suck at it. I've been on golf courses for 30 years and I'm still a 15 or 16 handicap. which means I bogey almost every hole, on average. But, none of that matters.
My mind runs, a lot. It never stops actually. I've tried conventional forms of meditation, the gym, all kinds of stuff. Until one day I was watching one of my favorite movies of all time, Layer Cake. Keep in mind I've seen this movie, I don't know, a lot of times, even before this, but one time I realized what one of the characters means when he says that meditation is concentrating the front of the mind so the rest of the mind can be at peace. I realized that's what golf is for me. No matter how bad (or well) I play, my mind only focuses on what I'm doing at that moment, and/or for the 4 hours on the course. It's the only place on the planet where I only think about one thing. Golf is my meditation, my sanctuary, my peace.
It's expensive meditation, but the more I play, the better I feel. I hope everyone can find a peaceful place in their mind.

Ha, I love golf myself, although it is definately not a meditation for me. It isn't even relaxing. I think Jack Lemon said it best when he said "How golf can be the most peaceful in surroundings yet provoke a heart attack with frustration is beyond me." I agree since I spend more time in the trees than the squirrels.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I too have grown up on a golf course. I love playing golf! Ok, I will be honest, I love putting. I'm REALLY good at it! LoL But I cannot swing a club to save my life! It's sad really BUT I do find putting so relaxing!! I definaly know where your coming from!
ReplyDeleteWow, very interesting and true. Peace of mind is hard to find. As yourself, my mind never stops running. I always say " if it isn't one thing it's the other". It just seems there is always something to think about, do or plan for. It's hard to let go and really find your center, your peace. This summer after I graduate, I want to find something I can really focus on and not let my mind wander onto other things. Cool Blog!
ReplyDeleteHell yeah. I have played SH a couple of times. When it was cheaper. Fun course. Good one to walk and get some exercise. You are better than me. If i play often and memorize the lengths of each club, i can play bogey golf but as often as I play i am happy with a bogey. usually a random par perhaps a birdie if I am lucky and mostly bogey, double, quadruple..anyway i know what you mean that is all that is on my mind out there, the grass, the wind, which club to hit. The smells of the golf course along could rock me to total relaxation....good blog
